Exploring the Outdoors in 2026

It’s time for a new year and new resolutions. This year, I want to spend less and invest more. At the same time, I want to spend more time in nature and explore what’s close to home. That means making better use of our state parks pass, the 4th Grade National Parks program, and visiting free parks and nature areas near us. Take a look at our 2025 Travels here.

January

January is half done and we have already visited two parks we never visited before: Sheldon Lake State Park and Jocelyn Nungaray National Wildlife Refuge, previously known as Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge. Both parks are close to Houston and easily visited on a day trip.

April

In April, we planned an Easter road trip to McDonald Observatory and Davis Mountains State Park in West Texas. What a change in environment from Houston! I enjoyed the cool breezes and unique views in the Chihuahuan desert. The highlight was naturally the Star Party at the Observatory. We also enjoyed Texas Parks life, visiting Llano River State Park and Balmorhea State Park during this trip. Read trip diary.
