Quick guide to visiting Brownsville, Texas

Brownsville is a lively Texan city on the banks of the Rio Grande, right on the Mexican border. It has a unique culture that is a mix of Mexican, American, and Texan. Spanglish (Spanish + English) is the unofficial language! Being a history and culture nerd, I really loved visiting and exploring major attractions in Brownsville.

Brownsville has played an important role in US military history. The Battle of Palo Alto of the Mexican American War – which led to US Victory and invasion of Mexico – took place here in 1846. During the Civil War, Brownsville was an important trading route to avoid the Union Blockade. You can see exhibits narrating the military history at the city museums.

What else can you do? Go to the Gladys Porter Zoo. Check out the birding trails. See the Palo Alto Battlefield. Hike the Sabal Palm Sanctuary. Shop at the Farmer’s Market on Linear Park. Find your favorite taco spot. Mexican food down here is amazing. Eat a pink leche snowcone (locally known as raspas) – I have never found them outside of the RGV!

An added bonus – there are quite a few things to do nearby in the Rio Grande valley. South padre is beautiful and a quick ride away. Mexico is also super close and nice to go for a fun weekend. If you’re looking for the best time to visit, go for the Sombrero Festival held during the annual Charro Days holiday at the end of February.
